INTERVIEW WITH THE FOUNDERS
I was in my final year at Harvard Business School in 2008 when the buzz around affordable housing started in India. But the debate did not emphasize the interlinked nature of the challenges. To build sustainable and inclusive communities, the challenges we face are not purely architectural, financial or social; they bring to surface these inter disciplinary issues. This is why we decided to enter this space. Hence, mHS is based on the principles of community involvement, affordability and sustainable design.
The urban low-income market is extremely diverse and each segment is large. The rickshaw puller’s housing need is very different from that of the maid or the newly married electrician. At micro Home Solutions, we see the need to offer a portfolio of housing solutions that are affordable, viable and scalable. Urbanization presents a great opportunity to the country and government has a critical role to play. - Rakhi Mehra

Our aim is bring design where it has never been and where it is needed the most: to India’s low-income urban communities. The marginal impact of better design is huge. Seeing the developments around, I have to say that design principles (such as better lighting, ventilation, and efficient use of space) are the most neglected aspects of low-income housing projects and policies in India. At mHS, we aim to play a niche role in bringing these elements and stakeholders together in the challenging Indian urban environment. – Marco Ferrario
